Chargers swoop for Dugard ahead of weekend National League double-header

The World Speedway Riders’ Association Oxford Chargers have swooped to sign proven National League rider Kelsey Dugard, who joins the club with immediate effect.

The 25-year-old has signed in place of Jacob Fellows who leaves Oxford Speedway with the club’s very best wishes having made four appearances this season.

Dugard joins with an impressive National League CV having won four major team honours with Eastbourne including the National Trophy, Gold Cup and Knockout Cup (all 2015) plus the League Championship in 2018.

His signing also extends the Dugard family’s association with Oxford Speedway to a third generation. Kelsey’s grandfather – Bob Dugard – was co-promoter between 1972 and 1975 while his father – Martin – rode for the Cheetahs between 1988 and 1992 and remains the club’s sixth highest all-time points scorer.

“I’m really pleased to sign for Oxford Chargers and can’t wait to get going,” said Dugard. “Obviously Oxford has a close association to my family, so to be the latest name to represent the club is a cool moment for me.

“When the opportunity presented itself I simply had to take it. Oxford has been one of world speedway’s great success stories in the last year and I’m keen to be part of it.

“I’d also like to place on record my thanks to Workington for their support this season. I’ve enjoyed my time in Cumbria and wish the club every success moving forwards.”

Dugard will make his Chargers debut on Friday when Peter Schroeck’s side travel north of the boarder to race Edinburgh Academy in the National League.

Twenty-four hours later, Chargers take on Berwick Bullets at Shielfield Park in another National League tie. Schroeck was pleased to welcome Dugard to the team ahead of both fixtures.

“Kelsey is a really talented rider at this level, and we have great faith in his ability to do a good job for us at reserve,” said Schroeck. “There is no doubt in my mind that the Chargers can challenge for top honours this season.

“It’s tough on Jacob (Fellows) who leaves with our best wishes, but we’ve made a decision which we believe adds great strength in depth from top to bottom.”

Dugard will make his home debut for Oxford Chargers on TUESDAY, June 6, when the club hosts Mildenhall Fen Tigers in the National League. Tickets will go on sale shortly via the club website with adults priced £12 and all U16s eligible to watch for FREE!
