Oxford look to eclipse Comets in season finale for Cheetahs at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium
SD TIMMO CAR SALES Oxford Cheetahs are looking to complete their home fixtures in the Cab Direct Championship with a victory over the Workington Comets at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium on Wednesday evening (August 12) at 7.30pm.
Accompanied children are again free, as they are throughout the whole season at Oxford Speedway.
It is the final official home fixture for Cheetahs, who are unbeaten in the last five meetings at Cowley and looking to extend that run to six.
But it won’t be the last action at Sandy Lane this season, since the Real Mini Company Oxford Chargers still have three home meetings to go in the WSRA National League, starting with the visit of Leicester Lion Cubs on Sunday, August 23 at 3pm.
Cheetahs’ final home meeting comes at the end of at, at times, traumatic season for the club behind the scenes, after the loss of a streaming greyhound contact. But Oxford have survived, with the addition of Mike Austin and Spencer Timmo to the promotional team ensuring the long-term survival of Cheetahs. Team planning for 2027 has already commenced.
Wednesday also sees an almost unique event in the build-up to the meeting – a near total solar eclipse at 7.11pm, the first one in Oxfordshire since 1999.
Oxford promoter Jamie Courtney says: “In a lot of ways, as we reach our final Championship meeting at the Oxford BetGoodwin Stadium, any on-track problems have been dwarfed by what happened behind the scenes earlier this year. There was a point when our ‘last’ meeting could have been at the start of this season.
“One of the biggest positives to come from all the upheaval was that Spencer Timmo and Mike Austin joined me on the leadership team. Along with team manager Peter Schroeck, we have not only been looking at getting the best out of this season but also looking at what is ahead.
“Cheetahs have been in fine form at home in recent weeks, and the boys will want to go out with a positive performance against Workington Comets.
“It seems highly appropriate that the Comets are our visitors, given the solar eclipse on Wednesday evening. It is probably the last-ever within our lifetimes, and if the supporters turn up in good time, they can witness the eclipse in a group setting at the stadium.”

Admission is available at the early bird price of £21 for all adults, which increases to £23 on Race Day. All under-16s go free. Spectators are also reminded that they will need to pay £2 when booking their ticket if they are planning to park in the Unipart car park. Parking at the Unipart car park is now fully restored and the club thank Unipart for their co-operation.
On Race Day, there is now also the chance to buy tickets by cash or card at the box office from 6pm.
