Kids Go Free at Oxford Speedway, while Cheetahs host Berwick Bandits on Friday evening

SD TIMMO CAR SALES Oxford Cheetahs are hoping for a bumper turn-out when speedway at the Bet Goodwin Oxford Stadium switches to Friday evening this week (July 24 at 7.30pm) for the visit of the Berwick Bandits in the Cab Direct Championship.

Cheetahs will also race at home next Friday (July 31) against arch-rivals Poole Pirates – which like the Berwick meeting is another re-arranged fixture.

Accompanied children are free throughout the season at Oxford Speedway. But the change to Fridays for the next two weeks, plus the start of the school holidays, make these meetings, in particular, ideal nights out for the family.

The Oxford promotion will be keeping a keen eye on attendances over the next two weeks.

Promoter Jamie Courtney says: “Staging speedway at Oxford on a Friday evening is not re-inventing the wheel.

“Many of our supporters will remember Cowley’s glory days in the 1980s that saw Hans Nielsen, Simon Wigg and the like regularly performing in front of big Friday crowds, not to mention the pre-Cardiff Championship Pairs which were another crowd puller between 2022 and 2024.

“Friday night speedway is back for the next two weeks by popular demand. We asked those who subscribe to our WhatsApp channel if they would prefer our re-arranged fixtures to be on a Tuesday or a Friday and we’re only too happy to oblige the 124 who voted for the start of the weekend – only 11 preferred the Tuesday option.

“We will be monitoring things at the turnstiles for both the meetings against Berwick and Poole. If there is a significant rise in attendances then it will play a serious part in our forward planning.”

Admission is available at the early bird price of £21 for all adults, which increases to £23 on Race Day. All under-16s go free. Spectators are also reminded that they will need to pay £2 when booking their ticket if they are planning to park in the Unipart car park. Parking at the Unipart car park is now fully restored and the club thank Unipart for their co-operation.

On Race Day, there is now also the chance to buy tickets by cash or card at the box office from 6pm.
