Oxford track passes test, while Cheetahs head to Workington on Saturday

PROMOTER Jamie Courtney has revealed how close he was to postponing Wednesday’s meeting at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium. Real Mini Company Oxford Chargers took a hard-fought 50-40 victory over King’s Lynn Young Stars to get off the mark in the WSRA National League.

Despite intermittent rain during the daytime on Wednesday, in addition to heavy rain on preceding days, the meeting has been hailed by several knowledgeable supporters as the best meeting seen at Cowley this season. As no coincidence, it was the first meeting to take place since a new consignment of shale was delivered.

Speaking post-meeting, Courtney said: “On Tuesday, I was all ready to send a message telling everyone the meeting was off, because the track was a soggy mess after all the recent rain.

“A big thank you to Wayne Hutt who helped me get the track back into shape. We’ve been waiting for a while for some new shale to be delivered. We’ve now got it and everyone can see the difference that it has made – because it was a great meeting.”

Courtney was also stand-in team manager on Wednesday evening. He said: “I had the easy part, really. It’s the lads who put in all the hard work and congratulations on them on such a fantastic team performance to which they all contributed.”

Meanwhile, SD Timmo Car Sales Oxford Cheetahs travel to Workington on Saturday evening, where new signing Edward Kennett will make his debut in a Cab Direct Championship clash.

Luke Killeen is still out with a cracked rib, and Cheetahs will use rider replacement in his place.

Team manager Peter Schroeck says: “We’re heading up to Workington and we’re looking to be competitive. It’s a great racetrack up there – and all the boys are looking forward to the meeting.

“We’ll give it out best shot and see if we can come away with some league points. With a little luck in our direction, I can’t see why we can’t do that. That’s our aim – it’s a long journey up there and a long drive back. We’d like to do that with a smile on our faces.”

The next meeting at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium is next Wednesday (June 17) at 7.30pm, when the SD Timmo Car Sales Oxford Cheetahs take on the Glasgow Tigers in Cab Direct Championship action. Tickets are on sale on the Oxford Speedway website at: https://oxfordspeedway.club/tickets/
