REPORT: Chargers on top after convincing home win over Berwick

The World Speedway Riders’ Association Oxford Chargers powered by SD Timmo climbed to the top of the National League table on Wednesday night after beating Berwick Bullets 60-30.

The win was Chargers’ biggest of the season and maintained the club’s 100 per cent record at Sandy Lane this year while extending the current winning streak to eight meetings.

Dynamic duo Jordan Jenkins and Henry Atkins again topped the score chart with the former recording a paid maximum while Atkins raced to a faultless 15-point maximum.

But there were also heat wins on the night for Jacob Clouting, Ryan Kinsley, Jody Scott and newcomer Jason Garrad while Luke Killeen returned with an excellent 6+3 after registering three successive second places following a second heat exclusion.

Chargers’ team performance pleased Team Manager Peter Schroeck, who said it provided his men with the perfect preparation ahead of Saturday’s mouth-watering trip to second placed Leicester.

“That was a great result for us,” said Schroeck. “We were favourites and while we targeted victory before the meeting we were all thrilled to break the 60-point mark.

“It shows the boys have clicked as a team and as I keep saying everyone in the pits is helping one another out knowing we have the talent to go all the way in this league. We’ve had a good run of fixtures and results and now we face our biggest test when travelling to Leicester on Saturday.

“For now, the boys deserve the praise as tonight summed up what a complete team performance should be – I’m very proud of their efforts. Berwick found it tough going at the end with three back-to-back maximums against them, we wish them well for the rest of the year.”

Speedway returns to Sandy Lane on FRIDAY night when the Monarch Cheetahs host Plymouth Gladiators in the Cab Direct Championship. Tapes-up is at 7.30pm and tickets are available to purchase now.

Adults are priced £20 and all U16s go free.
