PREVIEW: Chargers have their eyes on top spot ahead of Berwick’s Sandy Lane visit

The World Speedway Riders’ Association Oxford Chargers powered by SD Timmo can go top of the National League table by beating Berwick Bullets at Oxford Stadium on Wednesday.

Unbeaten in their last seven fixtures, Chargers enter the meeting within the play-off frame of British Speedway’s third tier and can leapfrog table-topping Leicester Lion Cubs by recording an eighth back-to-back success.

Peter Schroeck has named an unchanged 1-7 following Sunday’s triumph over Kent Royals at Iwade Stadium.

And while Bullets sit bottom of the National League, the Chargers chief has called on his riders to retain their professionalism by avoiding any complacency against the Northumberland outfit.

“Berwick have had a difficult season, but I don’t believe their position in the table represents the team’s quality,” said Schroeck. “They pushed us hard at Shielfield Park in June and we had to rely on a last-heat maximum to secure the points.

“Therefore, we can’t rest on our laurels and assume our form in recent weeks will cancel out any threat they pose. We’ve got to keep it professional, and we’ve got to ride to our full potential.

“Doing so should place us in a good position before visiting Leicester on Saturday which will be our biggest challenge of the season to date.

“Sunday’s win at Kent was great for the team and spirits remain high in the camp. But the job is far from done yet with four teams still pitching for a spot in the Grand Final so we’re remaining grounded and level-headed knowing there’s a job to do.”
