PREVIEW: Schroeck rallies Oxford for play-off push

Peter Schroeck spoke of the importance of appreciating speedway being back in Oxford ahead of tonight’s home meeting against Glasgow Tigers.

Monarch Oxford Cheetahs go wheel-to-wheel with the Tigers this evening (7.30pm) at Oxford Stadium, Sandy Lane, looking to get back to winning ways.

Six of Cheetahs’ final seven meetings are at Oxford Stadium, presenting an opportunity to reduce the five-point gap to the SGB Championship play off places.

Schroeck said: “It doesn’t matter who comes to Oxford, we want to win. It’s important for us because that’s what’s going to put us into the play-offs. If we do it under the circumstances with all the injuries we’ve got, we all need a pat on our backs because it’s been tough.

“Winning our matches at home is important. We’re more than capable of doing it, with the right attitude and the right approach I think we’ve got a good chance. We can’t control what other people do, we can only control our own destiny.

Let’s keep enjoying it and appreciate what we’ve got, because speedway is the winner with having Oxford back.”

Scott Nicholls is ruled out tonight with an injury sustained earlier this week. Chris ‘Bomber’ Harris will appear as guest rider.

Elsewhere, Schroeck is excited to see what 17-year-old rider Luke Killeen delivers on his debut this evening.

The Australian races as guest just eight days after making his first appearance for Oxford Chargers.

“He’s a hell of a talent, we’re going to give him a go and he could end up being a surprise,” said Schroeck.

“The boy’s got the right attitude towards speedway, to me he’s no different to anybody else. A lot of the reserves in the Championship are riding in the National League and he’s no different.

“He’s only 17-years-old but he’s got a very good head on him. He’s going to be made very welcome because he’s exciting.

“I’m very excited, it’s not just about the points but having that excitement. He’s one of the riders who enjoys his speedway. When they’re having a good time they usually come up with the goods.”
