Kyle Newman excited to launch his season at Scunthorpe this weekend

Oxford Cheetahs heat leader Kyle Newman is looking forward to racing in his first competitive meeting of the season this weekend at Josh Auty’s testimonial in Scunthorpe.

The three-times Premiership winner features in a star-studded line-up at the Eddie Wright Raceway including former British Champions Chris Harris, Danny King and Charles Wright.

March has been a long time coming for Dorset-based Newman, who revealed he has been working hard off the bike and in the workshop through the winter to be in the best possible shape for Cheetahs’ opening Championship fixture on April 13.

The 30-year-old has adopted a new training programme to build fitness and added two Godden engines to his equipment which he plans to use through the season. It marks the beginning of a new era for Newman, who has raced GM engines throughout his 15-year career.

“I spent a lot of time with Josh (Auty) in Australia during the early parts of my career and I’m pleased to be part of his big day,” said Newman. “For me, the meeting is about getting some competitive laps under my belt and really understanding my new equipment.

“I plan to get plenty of practice in between now and our first Championship meeting against Scunthorpe so I’m in good shape both on and off the bike. I’ve been very consistent with my fitness routine through the winter and like to get in the gym first thing in the morning when I’m motivated to push myself.

“It takes some sacrifice, but that’s par for the course in professional sport. I’m lighter than what I was at the end of last season so I’m feeling good in myself and looking forward to the season.”

Work at Oxford Stadium to return the track and its facilities to their former glory are nearing completion.

A perimeter safety fence and air fence were installed last week while riders’ new pits facility along the back straight will be complete in time for the squad’s press and practice session later this month.

Newman added: “I’ve seen photos of the track and it looks in fantastic shape. On first impressions, it looks like Oxford will be a proper racing track where gating gloves alone won’t win you races.

“The wider straights and corners allow riders to explore multiple lines, so if you’re in front you’ll have to be on your guard. I’ve heard ticket sales are going really well, so if you’re considering attending our opening meeting I’d encourage you to book now and avoid disappointment.

“I’ve had some memorable meetings in my career and this event will be right up there. Hopefully we can start the rebirth of Oxford Speedway in style and bring home the points.”
