Oxford Chargers bring down curtain on 2026 speedway season at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium on Friday evening

REAL MINI COMPANY Oxford Chargers are involved in their final meeting of the season – and the final speedway meeting of 2026 at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium – when they entertain Buxton Bulls in the WSRA National League on Friday (October 2) at 7.30pm.

It’s been a fraught season at times for Oxford Speedway – who returned after 15 years in the wilderness in 2022 – especially early in the year, when the loss of a greyhound streaming contact at the stadium threw doubt over the future of the Oxford Cheetahs and Chargers.

But with fresh investment from Spencer Timmo and Mike Austin – who joined Jamie Courtney on the promotional side – the club has completed the season and are already looking forward to 2027.

September also brought silverware, with Sam Masters and Anders Rowe winning the Championship Best Pairs at Poole, and Chargers’ skipper Jody Scott winning the British Under-19 Championship at Plymouth.

Oxford promoter Jamie Courtney said: “There’s no hiding the fact that the deal which brought Sandy Lane back to life in 2022 was built around speedway and greyhound racing operating side-by-side with the facilities also shared with the community.

“The loss of the dogs was a difficult hurdle to overcome. Fortunately we discovered that there were plenty of people in key positions who shared our desire to keep the doors open for speedway.

“After all the hard work in the winter of 2021, it would have been a disaster if the only time you could see the arena was when it masqueraded as White Hart Stadium in the second series of Mobland.

“What also changed was that Oxford Speedway moved to a model which gave us autonomy. The future of greyhound racing will be decided by others. Ours is no longer inextricably entwined with it. Although let’s be honest both organisations thriving would be in the best interest of everyone.

“In a way it’s fitting that we end the season with another phoenix track, Buxton Bulls, ending the eight-year hiatus since the demise of the legendary Hi-Edge Hitmen.

“Over the years the unique track in the Peak District has been a production line for British – and quite a few Australian – riders including some names well known to us at Oxford such as Craig Cook, Charles Wright and Nick Morris.

“It should be a terrific night of action and I hope the supporters come along to watch speedway at the BetGoodwin Oxford Stadium for the last time in 2026, because it’s a long winter before the 2027 season begins.”

Tickets are on sale for Friday’s night on the Oxford Speedway website at: https://oxfordspeedway.club/tickets/
