PREVIEW: Chargers seek top spot ahead of Workington trip

The World Speedway Riders’ Association Oxford Chargers powered by SD Timmo return to action after a near three-week break on Saturday when travelling to Workington Comets.

It’s Chargers’ first trip to Northside Speedway following Workington’s resurrection over the winter having initially closed in 2018.

Team Manager Peter Schroeck has been forced into making three changes owing to the absence of Jordan Jenkins, Kelsey Dugard and Luke Killeen who are all sidelined through injury.

Alfie Bowtell has agreed to step in at number one while Sam Woods will continue to guest in Killeen’s absence. Rider replacement will operate for Dugard.

Victory for the Chargers will push them to the top of the National League with over half the season completed. And given only the top two teams at the end of the regular season advance to the Grand Final, Schroeck said a lot rides on the meeting.

“This is a big one for us,” said Schroeck. “We’ve been in great form lately, but so have Workington and they’re entering this fixture full of confidence.

“It’s a new track for us, so the early heats might take some getting used to the configuration and the racing surface. We’ll have to pull together as a team and work hard together if we’re to get points out of this meeting.

“On a side note, it’s fantastic to see Workington back competing in British speedway. Their story coupled with our own regeneration is a great example of how there is a demand for the sport in the UK and we should remain optimistic for a positive future.”

Tapes-up at Northside Speedway on Saturday is at 3pm.
