PREMIERSHIP: Spires stretch unbeaten run to three with win at Birmingham

Oxford Spires stretched their early lead at the top of the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership table to three points following a six-point victory away to Birmingham Brummies on Easter Monday.

Spires entered the fixture unbeaten in their opening two top flight fixtures having defeated both Birmingham and Sheffield by four points on home shale in successive weeks last month.

But Peter Schroeck’s side proved their worth on the road by becoming the first club to win away from home this season within 15 heats and confirm a hat-trick of wins.

Newly crowned Australian Champion Rohan Tungate led the way posting 15 points from six rides while Charles Wright (10+3) and Chris Harris (9+2) also weighed in with double-figure points hauls.

There was a heat victory too for Nicolai Klindt while Lewis Kerr and Ashton Boughen contributed vital points at reserve.

Team Manager Peter Schroeck said: “We knew the team was more than capable of winning this meeting, and we couldn’t be happier with the result.

“It was going to be tough with Maciej (Janowski), but the boys pulled together and were professional from the start of the meeting.

“Our maximums were really crucial. To post four 5-1s away from home is good going, and we needed them as Birmingham had strengths in their side too. From the day Oxford returned to track we’ve always said avoid last places, and we did that well tonight and I’m proud of Ashton too for showing real resilience in his final ride for winning back what turned out to be a crucial point.”

Oxford Spires return to action on Thursday, April 11, when travelling away to Ipswich Witches in the ROWE Motor Oil Premiership. Speedway returns to Oxford Stadium this Wednesday (April 3) when Poole Pirates visit in the BSN Series, tapes-up is at 7.30pm and tickets are available to purchase via the club website now.

Birmingham Brummies: Vaclav Milik 4, Wiktor Lampart 2, Zach Cook 3+2, Tom Brennan 13+1, Steve Worrall 2, Scott Nicholls 15+1, Lean Flint 3+2.

Oxford Spires: Maciej Janowski R/R, Charles Wright 10+3, Nicolai Klindt 7, Chris Harris 9+2, Rohan Tungate 15, Lewis Kerr 6+3, Ashton Boughen 1+1.
