Spires squad primed for launch fixture on home shale
Oxford Spires will make their track debut on Thursday evening when hosting Birmingham Brummies in the Premiership to launch the third speedway campaign of the club’s new era.
Led by Team Manager Peter Schroeck and captained by three-times British Champion Chris Harris, the Spires are Oxfordshire’s newest professional club and are one of seven teams competing in this year’s top flight.
Polish superstar Maciej Janowski has been confirmed to ride at number one with Premiership winner Charles Wright, Danish international Nicolai Klindt and current Australian Champion Rohan Tungate completing the main body of the team.
Fan favourites Lewis Kerr and Ashton Boughen will ride at reserve.
A big crowd is forecast at Sandy Lane with the night marking the first speedway action at Oxford Stadium since Oxford Speedway’s National League team – Oxford Chargers – lifted the third-tier crown in October.
Schroeck is relishing the challenge ahead and called on supporters to make themselves heard when tapes rise.
“There’s a lot of excitement in the camp now the countdown to the new season is reaching its end,” said Schroeck. “A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to be in the position to run three clubs in three leagues, and everyone can’t wait to get going.
“The boys have connected really well during the off-season and at press and practice. I’m a big believer that team spirit can get you a long way in speedway, so building a good atmosphere in the camp is key for me.
“We’re pleased to have so much experience in the squad – particularly among those who have raced here already and won silverware at previous events.
“Birmingham will be a tough test, as will every team in the Premiership. But we’re backing ourselves to get off to a positive start and our supporters – as ever – will play a huge role as our number eight.
“Make plenty of noise, bring your friends and introduce the youngsters – let’s make 2024 a memorable one!”
