REPORT: Monarch Cheetahs take an aggregate point from Glasgow
The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs rounded off their Cab Direct Championship regular season by taking an aggregate bonus point from their trip north of the border to race Glasgow Tigers.
Cheetahs entered the tie requiring a win to leapfrog play-off bound Poole Pirates and finish top of the table, which would allow Peter Schroeck to choose his initial end-of-season opponents.
But Glasgow maintained their unbeaten league record on home shale this season by recording a 51-39 victory, helped by three race advantages in the concluding four heats.
Sam Masters top scored for Cheetahs on the night with 13 points while Lewis Kerr’s two heat wins helped him to nine points from five rides.
Team Manager Peter Schroeck took the positives from the meeting after Cheetahs picked up another aggregate bonus point.
“We knew Glasgow had quality in their team from one to seven,” said Schroeck. “We kept them honest through the meeting which is pleasing, and the boys gave it everything which is all we can ask for.
“Finishing runners-up at the end of our regular season is a fantastic achievement and we enter the play-offs knowing we have the capacity to go all the way this year.
“There’s still a lot of work to do, but we’re up for the challenge and next Wednesday will be a fantastic occasion for everyone connected to the club.”
The Monarch Cheetahs begin their play-off campaign at home on Wednesday, September 13, with the evening’s opponents to be confirmed. Tickets are on sale now and tapes-up is at 7.30pm.
Cheetahs’ play-off opponents will be confirmed on Saturday.
