REPORT: Cheetahs continue their championship charge
The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs extended their unbeaten streak in the Cab Direct Championship on Wednesday night after claiming victory over the Edinburgh Monarchs.
The Cheetahs recorded a 54 – 36 win over the Monarchs to make it nine wins out of nine, leaving them six points ahead of their closest rival in the championship.
They took control of the meeting from the outset with a decisive 1-2 from Sam Masters and Henry Atkins in the first heat. By the interval, the Cheetahs had created a 12-point lead and looked unstoppable.
Heat 13 sealed the deal for them after a thrilling battle between Craig Cook, Scott Nichols and Sam Masters. The Cheetahs wrapped up the meeting in style claiming a 4-2 victory in Heat 15 which has left them in a strong position to claim the aggregate bonus point when they make the trip to Scotland.
Skipper Scott Nicholls led the team on the night with a 16+1. Jenkins (11), Heeps (10+2) and Masters (10+1) put in strong performances, all scoring double-figures.
Team Manager Peter Schroeck said: “The boys were all fired up and got the job done, it was a great team effort.
“I am really proud of the way the team are working together. They are all on the same level – no one is bigger than the club. They are all proud to wear the Cheetah’s colours.
“We will approach next week’s meeting like we approach every other meeting. Everyone gets the same treatment, it doesn’t matter if you are bottom of the league or at the top. In speedway, things can turn around very quickly so we have to be alert at all times.”
Peter added: “We want to thank all of the fans from the bottom of our hearts. You are the ones that keep us going and we appreciate you turning up to support us week in and week out.”

The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs return to Oxford Stadium next Wednesday, July 19, when Glasgow Tigers visit in the Cab Direct Championship. Tickets will be on sale shortly and ALL U16s are admitted free.
