Cheetahs welcome cycle speedway champion Roman into the pits!

Pedal power replaced horsepower at Oxford Stadium when the Monarch Cheetahs welcomed newly crowned British Cycle Speedway Champion Roman Boaler into the pits.

Son of legendary Horspath Hammers and Team GB rider Mark, Roman scooped the British U10 title at Kesgrave, Ipswich, after going unbeaten through his qualifying heats to reach the A Final.

He defeated Bury’s Bobby Dunphy plus home pair Oscar Pemberton and Oliver Spurgeon to scoop the prestigious trophy and a British Cycling winners’ jersey.

It was Roman’s first British Championship and to mark the occasion he met up with seven-times British Speedway Champion Scott Nicholls who congratulated him on his achievement.

Oxford Speedway Team Manager Peter Schroeck said: “A huge well done to Roman on winning the British U10s Cycle Speedway Championship.

“Being the best in the country in your age category is no easy task and at Oxford Speedway we’re fortunate to have the expertise of a few national champions in our pits every week.

“The team loved having him and his winning bike in the pits and it just goes to show if you put your mind to something then anything is achievable. Hopefully we can use a bit of Roman’s spirit and determination later this season to help us on our way to the Cab Direct Championship play-offs!”

Anyone interested in trying cycle speedway can contact Horspath Hammers Cycle Speedway Club via the club’s Facebook page.

The club trains on Wednesday nights from 5pm with practice ending in good time for members to make the five-minute journey to Oxford Stadium for Cheetahs and Chargers fixtures in the evening.

The club is based in Horspath village next to the cricket ground and bikes and equipment can be provided.
