REPORT: Last heat maximum earns Chargers all the points in Berwick
Henry Atkins and Jordan Jenkins teamed up to secure a dramatic last race maximum and earn the World Speedway Riders’ Association Oxford Chargers powered by SD Timmo a 44-46 victory in Berwick on Saturday night.
Chargers twice led during their trip to Northumberland prior to the last heat drama. A 4-2 in the opening race courtesy of Jenkins and Jacob Clouting put Chargers two points up, before a second 4-2 in heat seven re-established the visitors’ slight advantage following Bullets’ own race advantage in heat three.
Hopes of claiming a second away win in as many nights appeared to be slipping out of Chargers’ grasp when back to back 4-2s in favour of the hosts in heats 11 and 12 put them 38-34 ahead.
But race advantages in heats 13 and 15 earned Chargers a dramatic – and memorable – win.
Team Manager Peter Schroeck said: “The boys showed outstanding character tonight. It was a close meeting all night, and it would’ve been easy to drop our heads going into the final race having led twice and let that advantage slip.
“But everyone did the opposite. They rallied to the cause and we’ve picked up four huge points on the road which could define our season later in the year.
“Everyone picked up at least a paid second place, so it was a real team effort and will certainly make the long drive home that bit more sweet.”
