REPORT: Cheetahs go top after downing Brummies in front of bumper crowd
The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs went top of the Cab Direct Championship table on Wednesday night after beating Birmingham Brummies 55-35 at Oxford Stadium.
Cheetahs entered their third Championship meeting knowing a win by 17 points or more would secure them top spot with most teams having completed a quarter of their league campaign.
Helped by paid double-figure returns for Sam Masters, Cameron Heeps, Lewis Kerr and Scott Nicholls, Cheetahs secured top spot with a race in hand to the delight of another bumper crowd.
Reserve Henry Atkins was again amongst the points, returning with eight, while Jordan Jenkins scooped the most bonus points on the night ending with 6+3. Ryan Kinsley played an important role too, scoring 2+1 which ultimately helped Cheetahs confirm top spot.
A delighted Team Manager Peter Schroeck applauded the support from the terraces and said it contributed to the team’s overall success.
“That was a big result for us,” said Schroeck. “Conditions were tricky early on but I must applaud the track staff who did an outstanding job to get the surface in top order in the time they did.
“Across the board, everyone chipped in tonight which is pleasing and we were blown away again by the number of people on the terraces and in the grandstand. There’s a terrific vibe at the club right now and it couldn’t come at a better time as we have a big week of fixtures ahead of us.
“Credit to Birmingham who pushed us hard at the end and certainly didn’t give up. We’re thrilled to be top of the league but we won’t let it get to us. The season is still in its early stages and there’s a lot more racing to be done.”
The Monarch Cheetahs resume their Cab Direct Championship campaign on Saturday night away to Berwick Bandits. Tapes-up at Shielfield Park is at 7pm.
The Cheetahs are next in action at home on Wednesday, June 21, when Poole Pirates visit. Tickets will be on sale shortly – all U16s go FREE!
