PREVIEW: Cheetahs all set for Championship opener against Redcar on home shale

The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs begin their Cab Direct Championship campaign on home shale on Wednesday evening when Redcar Bears visit Oxford Stadium (7.30pm).

The fixture is the first of 16 league matches Cheetahs will race between now and August which will determine the six teams that will advance to the Championship’s end-of-season play-offs.

Cheetahs enter the tie buoyed from last week’s KO Cup triumph over Edinburgh Monarchs which saw Peter Schroeck’s side confirm their place in the competition’s last four. Redcar meanwhile have booked Tom Brennan to guest for the Bears at No.1.

Schroeck wants to see a repeat performance of last week’s impressive outings against Edinburgh and has backed his side to deliver the goods.

“We’ve been really encouraged by what we’ve seen so far,” said Schroeck. “There is a real togetherness about the squad and everyone is willing to chip in and help each other out which was evident in our KO Cup meetings against Edinburgh last week.

“But now the slate is cleaned, and every team begins level on points with one goal of reaching the end-of-season play-offs.

“The Championship is the bread and butter of our campaign, and we want to be consistent performers at home while picking as many points up on the road as possible. Redcar have good strength in depth and Danny King and Charles Wright were solid riders when they visited Oxford last season.

“Tom Brennan is a dangerous guest booking as well. It’ll be a close meeting, our priority is to first and foremost win and then look to build up a lead big enough which we can defend to pick up the aggregate point when we race away at Redcar in July.”
