REPORT: Courtney “overwhelmed” by fans’ support as Cheetahs start with a bang against Scunthorpe
The Monarch Oxford Cheetahs came from behind to mark the beginning of the club’s new era in winning style against Scunthorpe Scorpions at a sold-out Oxford Stadium on Wednesday night.
Club captain Scott Nicholls and number one Troy Batchelor paired up in heat 15 to clinch a 49-40 victory as 2,000 fans entered the Cowley venue’s doors for the first time in a decade.
It was an emotional evening for many, with speedway’s return marking the end of a 15-year absence from the city.
Oxford Speedway promoter Jamie Courtney said he was overwhelmed by support from the local community and thanked everyone who attended.
“I was nervous at one point,” said Courtney. “But the boys pulled it out of the bag. We only had one practice session before tonight, so I think it was a pretty even playing field.
“There was some great racing which entertained the fans and we’re already excited to welcome our fans back next week. Their support was overwhelming. To have speedway back in the city is excellent – I’m over the moon.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported us, tonight was just the start.”
Monarch Oxford Cheetahs return to British Speedway Championship action on Good Friday (7.30pm) away to Poole Pirates.
Pirates are the next visitors to Oxford Stadium on Wednesday, April 20. Tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
